Inventory/ Proposal
The readings such as The Survivor, has taught me about the Holocaust and gave me a better insight on
those who went through such a struggle. The book, On the Island, was a pleasure to read based on this fiction novel it was an enjoyable read because it was a romance novel and have had a suspenseful ending. These books have changed my stance as a writer. To incorporate new skills as a writer you need to gain skills as a reader. The readings I have chosen are all written differently. Not only are all these readings different genres but have different narrative forms. The transformation of my thinking and beliefs has changed due to the thematic dimension of these narratives. The synthetic of each story I have chosen are different as well. After reading these novels I have chosen, I have picked up on different styles of writing which I incorporate into my own style of writing. Rationale After making an inventory of books I have read, I realized what genres I prefer and which I do not. After going over the reading list given, I have chosen works that I normally would not. I chose these readings to expand beyond my bubble. I would like to adventure out into new works and understand them better. After reading these books I have chosen, I hope to have fulfilled the quest of better understanding. The reading and writing for this course will be challenging due to the reading I have selected because it is out of my comfort zone, but I will take the challenge. This challenge will only improve my writing and even reading skills. Future Readings (1.) Joseph Campbell's Hero with a Thousand Faces- I want to read this book because it stuck out to me. Aside from being different from what I usually read I was excited to read this book after learning about it. (2.) Toni Morrison's Beloved- It might seem strange to most people but I enjoy learning about history, especially slavery. It is touching to me how some of these stories can have such an impact on you today. (3.) Sigmund Freud's The Interpretation of Dreams.- I chose this reading because it is out of my comfort zone, and it also sounds interesting to me. (4.) Jarrell, Randall, Pictures from an Institution- I chose this reading because I am not familiar with poets and how they write. So this will teach me a different way or not only reading but writing as well. (5.) Price, Richard, Freedomland- I absolutely love mystery novels and this one fits all my criteria for what I enjoy, but I also chose this because it is different from most mysteries I read, including the fact that this book is about racism. (6.) Russell Bank's The Sweet Hereafter- At first the summary of this book seemed boring, but after really reading different reviews and such I began to take interest and wanted to know more. (7. )Le Carre, John, A Perfect Spy- Again, I am a sucker for mysteries but this story is based off of events that I am not familiar with, nor would usually take interest in, so I figured I would step out of my box and read it. (8.) Williams, Joy, Escapes- I honestly chose this piece because it looked interesting and like something that I could use in changing my way of reading. (9.) Salinger, J. D., Franny and Zooey- I have never really gotten into reading short stories so I would like to see how it is. (10.) Austen, Jane, Pride and Prejudice- I chose this reading because in one of my other classes, my professor suggests reading any Jane Austen works at any chance I get. |
